How to sell Bitcoin for cash in Dubai

Three legal ways to turn BTC into dirhams, what each one really costs, and the routing mistake that quietly eats a third of a percent every time.

Short answer

Send the Bitcoin to a VARA-licensed exchange (OKX or Binance FZE), sell it into USDT, sell the USDT for AED, and withdraw to your UAE bank account. All-in that is under 1%, and the AED lands in your own IBAN. Need physical cash? Coinsfera's OTC store in Dubai pays notes at a 3–5% spread. The one public ATM costs 8–15% and is the answer to nothing except a tourist's AED 500.

Route 1: licensed exchange to your UAE bank (the default)

This is the right answer for almost everyone selling more than pocket money. It is the same pipe you used to buy, run in reverse.

1. Move the Bitcoin onto the exchange

Withdraw from your hardware wallet to your exchange deposit address. On OKX, small amounts can go in over Lightning for a few fils; anything meaningful goes on-chain. Send a small test amount first if it is your first time, and wait for the exchange to credit it before you sell.

2. Sell through USDT, not the BTC/AED pair

The obvious button is Sell BTC for AED. Do not press it. Sell BTC/USDT, then sell USDT/AED. Between May and September 2026 an automated DCA system we operate priced 2,300 routed AED→BTC trades against the global mid-price from our own node: the direct BTC/AED pair cost a median +63 to +69 bps, the two-hop USDT route +18 bps, on both exchanges. That was the buy side, but the sell side crosses the same thin AED books, so route the same way. On an AED 100,000 sale the gap is in the region of AED 450.

3. Withdraw AED to your bank

Add your own UAE IBAN (the account must be in your name) and withdraw. OKX charges a flat 75 AED per AED withdrawal, so batch rather than drip; Binance FZE pays out by local bank transfer. The money arrives as an ordinary domestic transfer.

4. Keep the paper trail

There is no tax filing for an individual, but a larger inbound transfer can trigger a source-of-funds question from your bank. Export the trade history from the exchange the day you sell; a licensed venue's statement is exactly what compliance teams want to see.

Fee schedules lie. We logged 2,300 real AED→BTC buys across OKX, Binance and BitOasis over four months and priced every fill against the global mid. Direct AED pairs cost +63 bps; routing through USDT cost +18. The free excerpt has the headline numbers; the full report has every rail, every month.

Route 2: Coinsfera OTC store for physical cash

Coinsfera is a walk-in over-the-counter store in central Dubai, open since 2015. You bring Bitcoin, they hand you AED notes, KYC on the spot. Spreads typically sit in the 3–5% range — a fraction of any ATM but several times the exchange route. It is the practical option if you need cash today, do not hold a UAE bank account, or are converting a one-off amount and would rather not open an exchange account for it. Full detail on our Bitcoin ATMs and cash desks page.

Route 3: the Bitcoin ATM (mostly a myth)

Per CoinATMRadar the UAE has roughly one active public Bitcoin ATM, historically at the Rixos Premium JBR in Dubai Marina. Listicles that put machines in Mall of the Emirates, Yas Mall or the airport are out of date. Global two-way ATMs charge 8–15% all-in, which means AED 80–150 of friction per AED 1,000 cashed out, against under AED 10 through a licensed exchange. Check the machine is online before you travel, and treat it as a last resort.

Route 4: private buyers and Telegram groups (skip)

Dubai has a lively grey market of "cash for crypto" groups. The economics can look attractive until something goes wrong, at which point you have no counterparty, no recourse and a cash transaction your bank cannot trace. UAE enforcement is not theoretical: in October 2025 VARA fined 19 unlicensed firms between USD 27,000 and 163,000 each and served cease-and-desist orders on MEXC and KuCoin. Use a licensed exchange or the OTC store.

Tax when you sell

For an individual there is none: the UAE has no personal income tax and no capital gains tax, so selling Bitcoin held as a personal investment creates no filing. If the coins sit in a UAE company, the 9% Corporate Tax applies on net profit above AED 375,000. The nuances (free zones, VAT clarification VATP040, OECD CARF reporting from 2027) are on the UAE Bitcoin tax page.

Frequently asked questions

Can I legally sell Bitcoin for cash in Dubai?

Yes. Selling Bitcoin is legal for UAE residents and visitors as long as you use a licensed venue. The three practical routes are a VARA-licensed exchange (OKX or Binance FZE) that pays AED to your UAE bank account, the Coinsfera OTC store in central Dubai for physical cash, and the single public Bitcoin ATM. Unlicensed cash meetups and P2P groups carry no consumer protection.

What is the cheapest way to sell Bitcoin in Dubai?

A VARA-licensed exchange with an AED bank withdrawal. All-in cost is under 1%: OKX charges a flat 75 AED per AED withdrawal, Binance FZE pays out by bank transfer. Sell BTC into USDT and then USDT into AED rather than hitting the thin BTC/AED pair directly — on the buy side we measured the direct AED pair at +63 to +69 bps versus +18 bps for the USDT route, and the sell side crosses the same order books.

Do I pay tax when I sell Bitcoin in the UAE?

Not as an individual. The UAE has no personal income tax and no capital gains tax, so selling Bitcoin held as a personal investment creates no tax filing. If the Bitcoin is held or traded through a UAE company, the 9% Corporate Tax applies on net profit above AED 375,000.

Where can I sell Bitcoin for physical cash in Dubai?

Coinsfera, a physical OTC store in central Dubai operating since 2015. Walk in with Bitcoin, walk out with AED cash, KYC required for meaningful amounts. Spreads run roughly 3–5%, tighter than any ATM. The only public Bitcoin ATM listed for the UAE has historically been at the Rixos Premium JBR in Dubai Marina, at 8–15% all-in; verify it is online on CoinATMRadar before you travel.

Is it safe to sell Bitcoin to a private buyer or in a Telegram group?

We do not recommend it. You carry the full counterparty risk with no recourse, and UAE enforcement targets unlicensed activity: in October 2025 VARA fined 19 unlicensed firms USD 27,000–163,000 each and issued cease-and-desist orders to MEXC and KuCoin. A licensed exchange or the Coinsfera store gives you a regulated counterparty and a paper trail your bank will accept.

Will my UAE bank accept the AED from a crypto exchange?

Transfers from VARA-licensed exchanges arrive as ordinary local bank transfers into your own IBAN. For larger amounts, banks may ask about the source of funds; a trade-history export from a licensed exchange answers that in one document. Keep the records even though there is no tax filing.

Measured figures refer to AED→BTC buys, May–September 2026, priced against the global USD mid-price × the 3.6725 AED peg; sell-side costs are inferred from the same order books, not separately measured.
